The advent of online poker ten years ago brought with it a new poker generation. What are the qualities of this new poker generation and what does it mean for poker in general? If you’re curious about what the new poker generation means, read on.
The New Poker Generation is Young
As you might expect from a new generation, they are young. Despite the fact that the legal gambling age in the United States is 21, lax online poker standards regarding age restrictions and more liberal age restrictions in overseas have created a wave of poker players who have been playing seriously since their teens. By the time they are ready to come out on the circuit, some have amassed years of experience, experience which is exponentially greater than their counterparts of an earlier generation due to the number of hands and access to games available online.
The New Generation is Aggressive
One lesson that everyone in the new generation of poker players have learned well is that aggression pays. These players, many of whom have few obligations and a lot of disposable income, are completely fearless with their chips, and fire at pot after pot with reckless abandon, regardless of what cards they hold.
The New Generation is Ready for a Challenge
Many of the top young players have already moved beyond no limit hold’em, and are playing pot limit Omaha at the highest stakes to win the big money. You can bet whatever new developments there are in the poker world, the new generation of poker players will be right out in front of it.
The New Generation of Poker Players is Internet Savvy
Of course, for the new generation, the Internet is their home turf. In fact, “internet pro” is almost synonymous with “strong young player.” While many have already successfully made the transition to live games, they seem completely unstoppable online, stymieing even the toughest of top veteran pros. The old pros are catching on a little bit, but most know that they are putting their bankroll in serious jeopardy every time they step into the virtual ring with one of these young hotshots.
The biggest names of the new generation of poker attract thousands of online fans, and today the biggest sites are fighting each other for signing the next big star. Internet poker players used to look at sign-up bonuses and online poker ratings before registering to a poker room, but today, big pro names seem to be just as important for the new players.
