Online Poker Etiquette
There are number of etiquette issues with online poker that you need to keep in mind. Some people occasionally violate etiquette. Usually other players will not respond when a player breaches etiquette. However, repeated violations will often drawing criticism from other players at the table through the chat feature. Very frequent offenders and those who commit very severe breaches may be reported to the administrators of the online poker room and subsequently be banned or restricted.
The follow is a list of general etiquettes that you should adhere to at all times:
- Swearing: Many players will want to curse when they lose a hand. It is fine to swear in the privacy of your own home. However, if you start typing swear words into the chat, other players may not be impressed. .
- Abusing/Chastising others: Sometimes, your opponents will get lucky and beat you when you didn’t expect to lose. This can be frustrating and some players choose to take out their frustrations on the opponent who beat him. They may tell this opponent that he/she is a shocking player, an idiot, etc. Many players will let it slide once or twice, but keep it up and someone will eventually will complain.
- Revealing your folded cards during a hand: whenever you fold your cards, you must wait until the hand is concluded before telling other players at the table what your cards were. It is a very big breach of etiquette to reveal what cards you folded while the hand is still in progress.
- Other breaches: If you breach other etiquettes not mentioned here, people will make you aware of your breaches through the chat feature.
- Collusion: Some players are tempted to collude with others. Collusion is forbidden by all online poker sites. In poker, collusion is two or three friends playing at the same table and letting each other know their hole cards are by telephone or an external chat program.
- In many online cardrooms it's strictly forbidden to use other languages than English, unless in specially permitted tables.
